Is this just OCR?
No. While PluckShot can extract text like traditional OCR, it uses advanced multimodal AI models to actually understand the context of the image. This means it can explain code, summarize articles, and detect actionable entities, not just read characters.
Do I need an API key?
It depends on the plan you choose. With the BYO Pro plan, you supply your own API key from providers like OpenAI or Anthropic. With the Managed Pro plan, we handle all the AI infrastructure and costs, no API keys required.
BYO vs Managed: Which should I choose?
Choose BYO if you already pay for an AI subscription that provides API access, or if you want full control over which providers you use. Choose Managed if you want a plug-and-play experience without worrying about API limits or separate billing.
What happens after the trial?
If you choose not to subscribe after your 14-day free trial, your account will transition to a free read-only state. You will still be able to view and search all your past captures, but you won't be able to create new ones.
Is my data private? Will it see everything on my screen?
PluckShot only captures the exact region you select, it never records your full screen or runs in the background. Your captures are sent directly to the AI provider you choose and are never stored on our servers or used to train AI models. The macOS Screen Recording permission is required by Apple for any app that captures screen content, even a small selected area.
Does Meeting Capture send a bot to my meetings?
No. PluckShot records locally from your computer, so nothing ever joins your call and it works with any meeting app. Your microphone and the meeting audio record as separate tracks, which is how the transcript knows who said what. Transcription is included with your account on every plan, and the audio recording is deleted as soon as your transcript is ready — unless you turn on "Keep meeting audio" to enable replay.
Is PluckShot Mac only?
PluckShot is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Do I have to use keyboard shortcuts?
Nope. PluckShot ships four visual Quick Access surfaces: a tray popover, a horizontal floating toolbar, a vertical sidebar toolbar, and a compact floating bubble. Click your way through captures without ever touching a hotkey. You can also turn them all off if you prefer the keyboard.
How is this different from uploading a screenshot to ChatGPT?
Uploading screenshots to ChatGPT works, but it takes several steps: take a screenshot, open your browser, navigate to the chat, upload the image, type a prompt, wait, then copy the result.
